Root Canal Treatment
Las Vegas, NV

Restore your tooth health with expert root canal therapy at Significance Dental Specialists.

Symptoms that Indicate the Need for a Root Canal

When you have tooth decay, the decay can generally be removed and the tooth structure filled or protected with a crown. However, when the pulp of your tooth becomes infected or damaged, it must be treated differently. You may need a root canal. A root canal removes the infection and saves your tooth, restoring the health of your smile. If you have tooth decay or severe pain, schedule a consultation with the office of Dr. Vinne Chen for a root canal in Las Vegas, NV with our in-house endodontist. Signs that you may need a root canal due to tooth decay or infection include the following:

  • Tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Pain upon biting
  • Headache
  • Jaw pain
  • Discoloration of the tooth
  • Tooth decay
  • Abscess
  • Swelling of the teeth or jaw

What to Expect from a Root Canal

The tooth pulp is located in the center of your tooth, in a pulp chamber, and is comprised of connective tissue, blood vessels, and nerves. There are numerous issues that may affect the pulp, including cracked teeth, injury, or a deep cavity caused by tooth decay. When the pulp becomes inflamed, it must be removed in order to save the tooth and prevent the surrounding tissue from becoming infected.

For this procedure, our endodontist will ensure your comfort during the visit by administering a local anesthetic. The pulp will be accessed through an opening in the top of your tooth and will be removed. The remaining hollow canals will be filled and sealed to prevent bacteria from accessing the structure. Once it has fully healed, a dental crown is then placed over your tooth to preserve its appearance and function.

Do I Really Need Treatment?

Receiving root canal therapy is often necessary to save a badly damaged tooth. For more information or to schedule a consultation for root canal treatment with our endodontist, contact the office of Dr. Huang in Las Vegas, NV today.

Without treatment from a doctor for root canals, pus from the infected tooth can spread to the root tip and eventually pass to the jawbone. This can cause an abscess, or a pus pocket, that can damage the bone that surrounds the tooth. The pressure this causes can result in excruciating pain and, if left untreated, can be life-threatening. An infected tooth or one that is suffering from tooth decay cannot heal on its own and will only get worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Modern root canal therapy is no more uncomfortable than getting a routine filling. Our endodontist administers a local anesthetic to keep the area completely numb throughout the procedure. Most patients feel relief afterward, since the treatment removes the infection that was causing their pain.
Common signs include persistent tooth pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, pain when biting, swelling of the gums or jaw, tooth discoloration, or an abscess. The only way to confirm is a clinical exam and X-rays. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule a consultation with our in-house endodontist.
Extraction is an option, but saving your natural tooth is almost always preferable. A natural tooth maintains your bite, prevents neighboring teeth from shifting, and avoids the cost and additional treatment of a bridge or implant. A root canal lets you keep your own tooth whenever possible.
In most cases, yes. After the infected pulp is removed and the canals are sealed, a dental crown is placed over the tooth to restore its strength, appearance, and function. This protects the treated tooth from fracture and helps it last for years.
An infected tooth cannot heal on its own and will only get worse. Left untreated, the infection can spread to the root tip and into the jawbone, forming an abscess that damages surrounding bone. In severe cases this becomes excruciating and can be life-threatening.
Most root canals are completed in one to two visits, depending on the tooth and the extent of infection. Our team will give you a clear timeline at your consultation.
